Courchevel has become one of the most upscale resorts in France, competing with Megeve for the rich and famous. Courchevel is the model modern resort with luxury hotels and private villas all practically ski in/out. It is part of the Trois Vallees (Three Valleys) ski area made up of Courchevel, Meribel, Les Menuires, and Val Thorens. This area constitutes the largest interconnected ski resort in France and one of the two largest in Europe.
Courchevel, located about 4 hours from Geneva, is built on several levels the names of which correspond to their elevation. Thus 1300, 1550, 1650, and 1850 have become part of the name with the 1850 level the highest and most prestigious. Courchevel 1850 provides both good skiing and an active social atmosphere where apres ski life can thoroughly be enjoyed. There are 6 discos that pulsate well into the night as well as a wide variety of gourmet restaurants.
Courchevel also has one of the best maintained network of runs in Europe. It is the location of the world's largest cable car (160 persons), which, together with the other lifts, provide for the movement of 52,000 skiers per hour. As you can imagine, lift lines are a rarity here. Contrary to rumors, grooming of the slopes does happen in Europe and Courchevel has one of the best systems. Additionally, snowmaking machines have recently been installed at the lower levels to insure a longer season. It is highly recommended for the beginner and intermediate skier, although the country skier will also find happiness here with over 30 miles of prepared trails.
