Description of Sierra Nevada:

In the south of Spain, not very far from the fabulous beaches of Costa del Sol, lies the ski resort of Sierra Nevada. High above the tree line, at an altitude of 6300', Sierra Nevada is the southernmost ski resort in Europe. The slopes here are vast and open facing mostly north to the east and west, providing excellent snow conditions from November until May on over 30 miles of prepared pistes. Site of the 1996 and 1997 World Cup Finals and candidate for the Alpine World Championships; it is suitable for all categories of skiers, however, it is especially recommended for the beginner and intermediate skier. The runs are wide and provide great opportunities for nice cruising journeys for the recreational skier. Cross country skiers will also find much to their liking with about 6 miles of prepared trails and many possibilities to explore on their own. In general, the emphasis in Sierra Nevada is on enjoyment. It is not a resort for the hot-dogger or speed skier, but rather is a place where the more cultured skier would go knowing that some of the time will be spent relaxing, basking in the sun, and enjoying the great Spanish food. But don't have any misconceptions, this is a ski resort, and it has a lot in its favor.

The beginning skier will be very happy here. The nursery slopes located at the Borreguiles area which forms the hub of the mountain. Many of the mountain restaurants are located in this area, where the ski school meets. There are many English speaking instructors who will introduce you to the sport. Also, there are plenty of easy runs to choose from, and a benefit not found in more resorts- an easy run back to town.

For the intermediate looking to improve, a trip to the Veleta lift will open up a few more difficult and challenging runs, including a wonderful run on beautiful open slopes of about 4 miles long in a 4400' vertical drop back to the village. Some mogul fields are usually available in the Monachil area.

For the advanced and expert, the run reputed to be the most difficult downhill run in Spain, is located at the top of Veleta to Borreguiles. The Monachil area, which is to the right of Borreguiles, will also provide some challenging black runs.

Apres-ski life is both lively and plentiful with over 30 bars and discos to visit. Since Granada is only 17 miles away, and you have a car, a day trip would prove to be very interesting.
