Blessed with abundant snow fall and with the kind of alpine architecture that most ski resorts try and copy, this resort in the Arlberg is a haven for the serious skier and those that wish to be. Nestled in the valley alongside the road that continues to Lech, it appears upon your approach to the town that the ski lift system is practically attached to some of the hotels. Upon closer inspection, you find, of course, it is not. But for most overnight guests, it is only a short walk along the pedestrian-only streets to a lift from where you can begin your assault on the mountain that can carry you to over 9000 feet. To assist in that assault, the St. Anton ski school (reputed to be the largest in the world), and stands ready to offer assistance for those in the need of a little turning up or a little fine tuning. Actually, modern ski instruction began here in the early part of the century allowing St. Anton to become known as the birthplace of modern skiing. But, it is not for the skiing alone that people come here. A very active night life exists. Beginning at the many snow-bars dispersed throughout the area, continuing at the 5 o'clock tea dance at the Post Hotel and continuing on into the wee hours at the Krazy Kangaroo above the town, where, after closing, some guests slide back to town on plastic bags. Along with Lech-Zurs, St. Anton is part of the Arlberg ski area and offers many of the same amenities as the other resorts, however the atmosphere is St. Anton can best be summed up by the expression: "Hardy skiers, party hard."
