Description of Val Thorens:
Val Thorens is situated
at the top of three valleys in Savoie, Franc which includes the
famous resorts of Meribel and Courchevel. It is the highest resort
in Europe at 6900', and offers over 75 miles or marked runs for
all classes of skiers. Here you can ski a vertical of 4200' in this
resort alone. For the adventurer, a network of over 300 miles of
marked runs will connect you with Meribel and Courchevel.
Because of it's altitude
and dry climate, good skiing conditions exist from December to May.
Ice is unheard of and light powder can be found right up to the
end of the season. The slopes face south, west, and north giving
the skier a constant variety from which to choose the best sun and
snow.
The Valley of La Maurienne
has recently been opened and will provide the possibility to ski
from 9000'down to 4200'. It is a beautiful, southwest facing area
with some powder skiing. Great for the intermediate and expert.
Val Thorens is the
youngest resort of the 3 Valleys network, and has developed a high
quality image in keeping with the areas other famous resorts. The
accommodations are in modern buildings constructed in the Savoyard
style. All hotels offer direct access to the slopes. From the hotel,
back to the hotel -- what more could a skier want?
Apres ski life is active
and varied with activities from ice skating and tennis to indoor
golf and swimming. Of course, the ever present discos rock till
the wee hours for those inclined to take a day off. Nine mountain
restaurants offer you the chance to savor the local fare such as
fondue and raclette. Adventurous skiers can even take an evening
torchlit descent from some of the chalet-style mountain inns. The
local ski school will give you a wide range of possibilities, from
guided tours of the 3 Valleys to initiation in cross-country, ballet,
monoboard, snow surfing, and Norwegian style Telemark to regular
lessons.
In recent years, Val
Thorens has become a traffic free resort adding to the beauty of
the views, fresh clean mountain air! We highly recommend this resort
for the person wishing to complete a week of skiing.
